The Green Republic Project, a private initiative geared toward the mobilization of the youth to plant 20 million trees across Ghana within ten years, has called on the president to establish a ministry for climate change and global warming.
Speaking at the second annual climate benefit ball to raise funds for the initiative, convener of the Green Republic Project, Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa commended the president for adopting the national tree planting day but added that, a ministry dedicated to the issue of climate change will go a long way to tackle the effects head-on.
The second annual climate benefit ball was under the theme “Emerging from Covid-19 Pandemic to Accelerated Climate Action”.
The convener of the Green Republic Project, Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa called on major stakeholders in the climate action space to endeavor to extend support to smaller groups in order to ensure sustainability.
He believes much attention must be given to African countries which contribute very little to the scourge of climate change, but are the most affected by its effects, such as disasters due to global warming.
He proposed to the president to establish a ministry for climate change and green environment by merging other ministries.
According to the Green Ghana campaigner, a dedicated ministry to climate action will tackle the teething issues confronting the environment head-on.
The fundraiser conference held in Accra brought together key stakeholders, including diplomats.
The Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Sugandh Rajaram pledged his commitment to supporting Ghana to plant more trees citing the ambitious objective of the Indian government to attain over 150 gigawatts of renewable energy which was achieved through collaborative efforts.
The Managing Director designate for the Republic Bank in Ghana, Benjamin Dzoboku, indicated that Republic Bank has earmarked about 200 million dollars towards climate action.
The Green Republic Project initiative started some five years ago with the hope of complementing government efforts against climate change.
Climate Change is a present and future threat, a war humanity must win at all cost according to the convener of the Green Republic Project.
Citizens are expected to plant a tree in the coming days as part of the National Tree Planting exercise.
